Governor Cooper Proclaims Fragile X Awareness Day

Raleigh, NC (July 20, 2023) – Celebrating National Fragile X Awareness Day, Governor Roy Cooper is proclaiming Saturday, July 22 as Fragile X Awareness Day across North Carolina as part of National Fragile X Awareness month.

Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is a genetic disorder caused by a mutation (a change in the DNA structure) in the X chromosome. It results in a wide range of developmental, physical and behavioral problems and is the most commonly known cause of inherited developmental disability worldwide and can affect multiple generations within a family.

In addition to the proclamation, Mark Benton, Chief Deputy Secretary of Health, DHHS, and Kelly Crosbie, Director, NC Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Use Services will participate in a Community Conversation and Ice Cream Social with individuals and families impacted by Fragile X Syndrome.

Hosted by the NC Fragile X Foundation, the event will take place on July 31st from 2 to 4 PM in the Adams Building at 101 Blair Dr., Raleigh, NC.  To ensure statewide access, the 60 minute program will begin live streaming beginning at 1:55 PM on the Foundation’s Facebook page. CART and ASL (American Sign Language) will be provided. The Ice Cream Social will follow the program from 3 to 4 PM.

Anyone interested in attending in person or online is asked to register in advance through Eventbrite.

The NC Fragile X Foundation is also hosting an Xtraordinary Fragile X Bowl-A-Thon on Sunday, July 23 from 3:00 PM to 5 PM at Rainbow Lanes Family Fun Center, 850 NC-42, Clayton, NC.  The organization also kicked off its statewide monthly Sip & Chats using Zoom on Wednesday, July 19 from 7 to 8 PM. Those impacted by Fragile X joined the conversation to discuss issues of mutual concern. This is an extraordinary opportunity to connect with other parents, caregivers and people impacted by the syndrome for moral support and peer advice the third Wednesday of every month from 7 to 8 PM.
